How does Formdrill work?

Step 1: Form Drilling

The Formdrill creates a bushing from the parent material using friction heat generated by high rotational speed and pressure.

As the metal heats up to around 600–750°C, it softens and is displaced rather than removed, forming a smooth, chipless hole.

This process produces a bushing about three times the wall thickness, providing more material for threading and stronger connections.

Step 2: Form Tapping

After the bushing is formed, a Formtap (often TIN-coated) is used to form strong threads within this bushing.
This process is also chipless; no material is machined away. This results in maximum thread strength.

Form tapping leads to faster processing times and eliminates the possibility of double pitch.

The required Formtap torque in Nm is approximately 20% higher than with conventional thread cutting, and a different core diameter is used.
